P&G and Astron Clinica
Announce Exclusive Collaborative Program to Develop
SIA™ Chromophore Mapping Technology for Cosmetic
Applications
LONDON, October 18th, 2004 – The
Procter & Gamble Company and Astron Clinica Ltd
announced that they will begin working in an exclusive
partnership to develop new applications for SIAscopy
in the cosmetics field.
SIAscopy, Spectrophotometric Intracutaneous Analysis,
is a unique skin imaging technology. It uses visible
and infra-red light combined with a sophisticated model
of the physics of light transport within the skin to
create sub-surface skin maps of different skin chromophores,
including haemoglobin, melanin and collagen. It has
been developed by Astron Clinica, based on an original
PhD thesis by Dr Symon Cotton, Technical Director.
The technology has been applied successfully to a range
of medical challenges, in particular the clinical identification
of malignant melanoma. Astron Clinica and P&G Beauty
have been collaborating to now develop the technology’s
potential for the cosmetics industry. In February 2005,
Dr Paul Matts, PhD, Principal Scientist, P&G Beauty
and Dr Cotton will jointly present the use of SIAscopy
in the analysis of skin aging at the American Academy
of Dermatology 63rd Annual Meeting.
“Mapping human skin chromophores via the SIA™ technique
presents a very exciting new technique to us,” said
Dr Nigel Kermode, DPhil, R&D Director, P&G
Beauty. “We believe that SIAscopy could provide
important new insights into the factors responsible
for human skin appearance, allowing us to develop technologies
that better deliver truly consumer-noticeable benefits.
SIAscopy is a perfect fit with P&G’s established
expertise in digital imaging”.
“SIAscopy is a breakthrough in medical imaging
which will now be applied to understanding the fundamental
optical principles behind the cosmetic appearance of
the skin,” said Annie Brooking, CEO, Astron Clinica. “SIAscopy
will enable cosmetic scientists to have a much clearer
understanding of the actual effects of their products
on human skin”.
